How to Request Eaton County Police Records

Michigan's Freedom of Information Act, codified at MCL § 15.231 et seq., gives everyone the right to request public records from the Eaton County Sheriff's Office. No reason is required. No residency requirement applies. The law covers police incident reports, arrest records, accident reports, jail and inmate data, and related documents.

To request records, visit the Records Division at 1025 Independence Blvd in person during business hours, send a written request by mail to the same address, or email your completed FOIA form to the department. A valid government-issued photo ID is required for in-person requests. For mail requests, include a self-addressed stamped envelope so the office can return your response. When emailing a request, attach the completed form and include your contact information.

Your request should include your full name, contact information, the type of record, the date or date range, the subject's name and date of birth if known, and a case number if available. Under MCL § 15.235, the office must respond within 5 business days. They may extend by up to 10 additional business days with written notice. Eaton County has been noted to take between 5 and 15 business days in practice.

Note: For in-person requests at the Eaton County Sheriff's Records Division, bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Without it, you may not be able to pick up your records or verify identity-sensitive documents.

Accident Reports in Eaton County

Fees for Eaton County Police Records

Standard fees under MCL § 15.234 apply in Eaton County. Paper copies cost $0.10 per page. Certified copies carry additional charges. Labor is billed at the rate of the lowest-paid qualified employee, in 15-minute increments, with no charge for searches under 15 minutes. Requests over $50 may require a 50% deposit before work begins.
